It is a challenging time to be a man or a boy
Looking at how we are presented in the media, are we supposed to be superheroes with unbelievable biceps, gigolos or buffoons? It is no easier to be a woman or a girl. Is today’s Hollywood standard of feminine beauty really one’s most valuable attribute?
Never before have we been so surrounded by media, confusing us with conflicting messages about right and wrong, and telling us that we are not good enough.
Part of the problem is that we are comparing ourselves with images that just are not real or even healthy.
We are also focusing on things that really don’t bring true joy.
What is it then that brings satisfaction and happiness to our existence? The sages throughout time have concluded that we need to focus on becoming our best selves, and in so doing bring good to all of humanity. They teach about integrity, respect, wisdom and love.
When experiencing media today, perhaps we need to ask meaningful questions. Is that the kind of person I want to be? Are those the values that I want to believe in? Is this worth my time? Is it helping me to get to where I want to go?
We need to remember that media can be very powerful in bringing about positive change, and it can improve.
It is indeed challenging to wade through a media soup of conflicting messages on a daily basis.
As we grow mindful about what we consume, we create a demand better media.
This is how we build a world we are proud to pass on to our children.
